City of Bellflower

Energy Solutions

In the years leading up to its energy infrastructure update, the City of Bellflower was facing budget pressure and strained staff resources. It seemed unlikely that the City would be able to replace its antiquated energy infrastructure with its budget constraints. Heating and cooling units, building automation and lighting systems across City facilities were on the decline, zapping tons of energy and driving utility bills up.

After learning about Climatec’s services in 2015, however, Bellflower found a budget neutral solution that allowed the City to address key infrastructure objectives. The infrastructure improvement program promised on deferred maintenance relief, reduced energy expenditure and energy stewardship. The City’s upgraded facilities would also become more comfortable for community members, who learned about the power of going green through the example set at City Hall.

“
This fiscally prudent opportunity has single-handedly helped Bellflower better preserve precious resources and beautify our community.
Juan Garza, Mayor of Bellflower

Project Solution

Bellflower’s comprehensive program optimized operations throughout the City. Climatec installed building automation systems, heating and cooling units (HVAC), smart weather-based irrigation controls, battery storage, CO2 based ventilation controls and a thermal water heating system at the Bellflower Aquatic Center. The HVAC improvements help to keep the community safe with improved indoor air quality and proper ventilation levels throughout City facilities.  Streetlights, interior and exterior facility lighting and lights at courts and fields were replaced with LED modernizations that feature monitoring technology and occupancy sensors.

‍

Project Results

With this program, the City will reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by about 609 metric tons annually, which equates to 140 cars off the road, 76,035 gallons of gasoline saved, 100 Bellflower homes powered, 14,075 people provided with water and more than 20,070 trees preserved from deforestation.
